NCFRMI NEWS - Nigeria Participates in Second Regional Review of Global Compact on Migration in Addis Ababa

From October 8-10, 2024, Nigeria, represented by the Honorable Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), Hon. Tijani Aliyu Ahmed, participated in the Second Regional Review of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (GCM). The event, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, brought together government representatives and key stakeholders from across Africa to assess the progress of the GCM since its adoption in 2018.

The Regional Review provided an opportunity for participants to evaluate the achievements and challenges encountered in migration governance and propose actionable strategies for the future. Discussions focused on identifying areas that need improvement to ensure the effective implementation of the GCM’s objectives. Recommendations from the event will contribute to the upcoming global review of the Compact at the International Migration Review Forum in 2026.

The gathering also served as a platform to strengthen regional cooperation and renew commitments to promoting safe, orderly, and regular migration across the African continent. In alignment with global migration goals, the event underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in enhancing migration governance and ensuring the well-being of migrants.

Hon. Tijani Aliyu Ahmed emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to implementing the principles of the GCM and working closely with regional and international partners to improve migration policies and practices. The event highlighted the critical role of countries like Nigeria in addressing migration challenges and advancing solutions that promote dignity, security, and opportunity for all migrants.
