The NCFRMI considers itself a protection, assistance and humanitarian body dedicated to ensuring that the right of its Persons of Concern is always upheld.
Aspects of Protection and Assistance
Protection and Assistance entail both legal protection (right to enter/remain, identity documents, freedom(s) as well as assistance (such as basic necessities, shelter, health, and empowerment for self-reliance, protection, tackling sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment] etc.). Protection should always be provided based on the principle of humanity, neutrality, and impartiality to, age, gender, and diversity mainstreaming.
Why Protection and Assistance
The need for international protection and assistance arises where such protection and assistance is lacking, either as a matter of law or as a result of any circumstance that threatens basic human rights.
Such a situation classically comes about in relation to persecution, the threat to life and personal security, armed conflict, serious public disorder or other man-made disasters, natural or ecological disasters as well as insecurity due to statelessness. Frequently these are interlinked and forced displacement is usually the resulting factor.

Empowerment
The Commission embarked on massive empowerment of internally displaced persons and other persons of concern through the provision of livelihood support items and skills training, so that beneficiaries can become independent and productive members of society. Durable Solutions
By definition, Internally Displaced Persons unlike Refugees have not crossed into the territory of another country; they still live within the borders of their home country except that they have been forced to flee their homes and community.
The Durable solution options available for IDPs include:
Return: of displaced person to former place of habitual residence
Resettlement: Reestablishment of concerned Person of Concerns in a place where safety is guaranteed
Integration: Locally integrating IDP's into host communities
Re-integration programs are built into any of the durable solution option.
What we do at the Commission::
Migration Coordination
In Nigeria, there are several Government and Non-Governmental Institutions dealing with different aspects of Migration. The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons serves as the coordinating body for all migration related issues. Furthermore, The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons has the key responsibility for ensuring that all the different actors involved carry out their mandates within certain agreed standards and for the purpose of achieving the core objectives.
